Teaching Grammar Communicatively: Part II

In our last webchat discussion, some 20 English teachers/educators have come to the agreement that grammar should not only be taught in language classes, but be taught in a communicative and fun way. To follow up on this interesting conversation, we invite you to join in our next webchat on May 12th, 2009 between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm Beijing Time, sharing the best practices of teaching English grammar from all around the world.

Here is how we propose this webchat to work:
a. Please reflect on your own classroom practices of teaching English grammar;
b. Send us one or two best activities that you have exploited in your grammar teaching, or examples that you would like to try for your class but not yet have a chance. We prefer you send us the examples and activities in PPT format before Monday, May 11th, 2009.
c. We will then run through these examples and activities at the beginning of the chat so that every participant in the chat will be able to see them.
d. During our webchat, we will be sharing and studying these examples from you, and discuss the following questions: Is the activity intended for awareness building, for production, or a combination of both? Which level of students do you work with for this activity? How has it worked for your class? How might you make changes next time to adapt to a different class? etc.
Here is one example of using a story to teach the third conditional (practice and production). Assume that students have learned about the sentence pattern (If I had listened to the weather forecast, I wouldn’t have gone to the picnic and got caught in the rain.)
Discussing the ending of a favorite story: The Wolf Is Coming!
Ask students to work in groups and begin with different subjects to make sentences:
If the boy hadn’t…
If the peasants in the field hadn’t…
If the wolf hadn’t…
Share the sentences with the class.
